Final grade formula

Required final exam score = (desired grade - current grade x (1 - final exam weight)) / final exam weight

Use the final exam weight as a decimal. For example, 40% becomes 0.40. The calculator also checks whether the result is above 100% or already within reach.

Quick intro

A final grade calculator is useful when your course has one last big exam and you want a clear target. It does not replace your syllabus, but it gives you a quick way to see whether your goal is realistic.

Example 1: raising a 72 to an 80

  • Current grade: 72%
  • Desired final grade: 80%
  • Final exam weight: 40%

Required final exam score: 92.00%

The current coursework counts for 60% of the class. A 92 on a 40% final would bring the total course grade to 80.

Example 2: checking if a goal is still possible

  • Current grade: 68%
  • Desired final grade: 90%
  • Final exam weight: 30%

Required final exam score: 141.33%

This is above 100%, so the target is not reachable through the final alone unless the instructor offers extra credit or changes the grading setup.

What is a final grade calculator?

It estimates the score you need on a final exam to finish with a specific course grade. The calculator uses your current grade before the final and the percentage weight of the final exam.

This is most helpful when your gradebook shows a current average but the final exam has not been added yet.

How to use it

Enter your current course grade as a percentage, then enter the grade you want at the end of the class. Finally, enter how much the final exam is worth.

If your syllabus says the final is worth 40% of the course, type 40. The calculator converts that value into 0.40 for the formula.

What if I need more than 100%?

A required score above 100% means the target cannot be reached through the final exam alone. It is a signal to check whether missing assignments, retakes, extra credit, or grade replacement rules exist in your course.

If none of those options exist, set a new target that is still useful, such as moving from a C to a B- instead of aiming for an A.

Study tips before finals

Use the required score as a planning number, not as a reason to panic. Break the exam material into topics, mark the topics you miss most often, and spend the first study sessions on the highest-weight material.

Practice questions matter more than rereading notes. If you have old quizzes or sample questions, use them to find weak spots early.

Final Grade Calculator FAQ

Does this calculator work if my final is optional?+

Yes, but only if you know how the optional final is counted. If your school replaces a lower test grade or drops the final when it hurts your average, check the syllabus first.

Why is my required final exam score negative?+

A negative required score means your target is already safe even if you score 0 on the final, based on the values you entered.

Can I use this for points instead of percentages?+

Use percentages if possible. If your class is point-based, convert your current points and target points into percentages first.

What if my teacher curves the final?+

A curve can change the final result. This calculator uses the raw grading weights you enter, so treat curved classes as estimates.
