Weighted grade formula

Weighted grade = sum(score percentage x weight percentage) / 100

When weights add to 100%, the result is your estimated course grade. If the weights do not add to 100%, the calculator shows a warning so you can check the syllabus.

Quick intro

Weighted grades can be confusing because a small category and a large category do not affect your grade equally. This calculator keeps the math visible so you can spot which categories matter most.

Example 1: standard course categories

  • Homework: 90% x 20%
  • Midterm: 78% x 30%
  • Final Exam: 84% x 40%
  • Participation: 100% x 10%

Weighted grade: 85.00%

Each category score is multiplied by its weight. The weighted points add to 85 out of 100.

Example 2: missing a project category

  • Homework: 88% x 25%
  • Quizzes: 82% x 25%
  • Midterm: 76% x 30%

Total weight entered: 80%

The result only covers 80% of the course. You still need the missing 20% category before treating the grade as final.

What is a weighted grade?

A weighted grade is a course average where each category has its own importance. A final exam worth 40% has twice the impact of homework worth 20%, even if both are listed as percentages.

Most college and high school syllabi use weighted categories because exams, projects, and daily work are not meant to count the same.

How weighted grades work

Multiply each category score by its category weight, then add the weighted points. If the weights add to 100%, the total is your course grade estimate.

If only some categories are finished, you can still enter them, but read the total weight warning before making decisions.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is entering scores as points instead of percentages. If homework is 180 out of 200, enter 90, not 180.

Another common mistake is forgetting a category such as labs, attendance, or participation. If your total weight is 90% or 110%, go back to the syllabus.

Weighted Grade Calculator FAQ

Should weights always add to 100%?+

For a full course grade, yes. If you are only checking finished categories, the total may be lower, but the result is not the full final grade yet.

Can I add extra credit?+

You can add it as a separate row if your instructor gives it a clear weight. If extra credit is added as points, your school system may calculate it differently.

What if my class drops the lowest quiz?+

Calculate the quiz category after dropping the lowest quiz, then enter that adjusted quiz percentage into the calculator.

Is this the same as GPA?+

No. Weighted grade is usually a percentage for one class. GPA combines multiple courses using credits and grade points.
